Puerto Varas, the gateway to Patagonia

Named one of Chile’a adventure sport capitals, Puerto Varas is a cosy town full of shops, restaurants and tour agencies. If you are looking at staying in the region this place is way better than closeby Puerto Montt.
One of the main sites is the nearby Osorno volcano. We found a fun way to explore the volcano offered by Margouya hostel which combines walk&bike. We hiked up until the ice of the glacier enjoying beautiful views of the lake as well as the Patagonian mountain ranges. Afterwards we were able to bike down the 15 km long road back to base. What a thrill!

The Petrohue river and falls as well as the Todos los Santos lake are further highlights of the area. To keep our adrenaline levels high we chose to go rafting on the river for half a day. We had a lot of fun going down the rapids, jumping from rocks and swimming along the raft – all of it with the view on the Osorno volcano we had climbed the day before.

In the evenings we explored the culinary offers of Puerto Varas and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of Kuchen, strudel and of course seafood.
